Origin of topic

Many architects felt disappointed after the design proposal of Huawei Terminal Headquarters, a European town, issued on the internet. There's no doubt that European styles are best sellers and popular among people. On the contrary, ordinary people regard CCTV building as a poor design like a large pair of shorts, while the design receives great praise from architects. Speaking of strange and weird buildings in recent two years, what is the criterion for building aesthetics? Being strange may be good from the perspective of architectural design innovations. Or there is no unanimous criterion, any owner can choose any style he or she likes, and architects have to design such style and control the quality of relevant buildings. For example, the Huawei Terminal Headquarters.

Highlights

The event can be analyzed from several aspects. In terms of aesthetic appreciation, the project is not weird; on the contrary, the Le Grand Large Hotel is quite weird, although there is no psychological difference for duplicating a European town and such a hotel. Different persons hold various aesthetic views.

In terms of the cultural aspect, any culture is formed in certain historical conditions and territory and it has its way of life and values. It’s abnormal to duplicate culture-free links and copies. To be honest, such behaviors are caused due to self-contemptuous cultural psychology.

During the process of erecting a building, besides architecture, also known as rational thinking inside architecture, what external “rationality” is there, such as capital rationality, government department rationality, and user habit rationality? For example, the duplication of European buildings will not be popular if there is no substantial mass basis. From the perspective of erecting a building, because users like it and the owner can sell the building after construction, which is a rational choice.

Weird buildings are related to the absence of concerns for sensitive fields in society, particularly in art fields. In my opinion, our aesthetic appreciation will be improved if our society is not so profit-driven or pursuing their interests in an excessively “rational” way but fulfilling their personal goals. There is no subject about artistic creation if people cannot find themselves.
